Here's a picture of a green pool we recently cleaned up without draining the pool.  This picture was taken when the pool was half way cleaned.  After we removed all the algae off the pool walls with our pool vacuum, we then treated the swimming pool water with a lot of pool chemicals to kill any remaining algae spores in the pool water.  During this entire process the pool pump is running, filtering out any contaminants left in the water.  For this reason, after a green pool cleaning, your swimming pool filter needs to be cleaned or backwashed too.
