When your pool equipment has gotten this old, it is definitely time to replace. Not only is the pool filter performance very poor, it can also be dangerous at this stage. The fiberglass shell of this sand filter can be weakened by age and the sun. Pressure from normal operation can eventually cause the filter to crack or explode. Also, anytime you have a chance to switch from a sand filter to either a cartridge filter or a DE filter you should definitely upgrade. As discussed in our earlier Blog Post, sand filters often struggle. They just aren't able to filter out as small of particles as cartridge filters or DE filters. Also sand filters only have a TINY surface area that can actually filter. 3 to 4 square feet is all most sand filters can handle at any one time. Most DE filters are 48 to 60 s/f and most cartridges range from 325 to 525 s/f of available surface area to filter. Upgrading your filter and getting new PVC piping installed is more affordable than most people think.
